How To Get Rid Of Dog Urine Smell
In this blog I aim to bring you all the resources that you need to train and look after your dog. Puppy training and Dog training will feature as well as what to do when the inevitable accidents occur. Dog urine smell is not something we want to live with and the effects of dog pee on carpets and furnishings can be a strain, but with help they will soon pale into insignificance as your well trained dog becomes a trusty and loving companion.
Now did your your beloved pooch decide, for whatever reason, to pee on your carpet – ouch! New carpet? Double ouch! But in your dog’s defense, he was probably just marking at as his turf. Not that it makes it any less smelly.. At any rate, if you find yourself in need of a solution to get rid of dog urine smell then this article will help you do just that! The steps outlined below are a no cost way to remove the smell and sometimes the marks caused by dog or cat urine. However, when I had a house cleaning business in California I found that using proprietary products specifically designed foe dealing with pet pee were best!
Sometimes the ‘home remedies’ can leave marks on the carpet and if the proportions are not measured correctly there can be bad results with smells only being temporarily masked and marks being made even worse. So I suggest that before you embark on any action to get as much information on as many products as possible and remember that the best are usually the most expensive. Once armed with all the information you can then make an informed decision on which course of action to take.
If cost is of prime importance then by all means try the remedy below, but if the carpet is worth more care then maybe a good branded stain and odour remover with a guarantee is a better option. Depending on where you live there will be different products available (which is why I make no recommendations) so searching a few links before making a decision may be wise.
OK – here is a basic guide that I hope helps you:
1) If you find a spot with dog urine while it’s still wet, you should attempt to soak up as much of it as you can. Use a bunch of paper towels to do so. If there is a strong smell of dog pee, but you can’t seem to figure out where the source of it is, assuming it’s an old(er) stain, you can use an ultra violet light in a darkened room to make dog urine stains visible.
2) Once you’ve found the spot (and tried to remove as much of the dog pee as possible if it was still wet) you should clean that spot with a mixture of vinegar and water (some recommend 50/50 mix some go with 1/4vinegar 3/4water) Use as much of it as needed. Also consider using a scrubbing brush for better penetration of carpet fibers. Once this is done use paper towels to blot it up (you can also use a wet and dry vacuum extractor)
3) Let the spot dry up then sprinkle some baking soda over it. Next mix 1/2 or 3/4 cups of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide with 1 teaspoon of detergent and pout it pour this mixture over the baking soda. Then use your fingers or a scrubbing brush to really work the soda into the carpet. Let it dry then vacuum the spot.
That’s all there is to it! If there is still smell/stains after, try the process again or select a commercial product.

Dog Urine and Lawns
Bitches or Vixen that are on heat tend to produce the worst effects but a great tip I am told is to add Tomato Ketchup to your bitches food (especially when she is in season) I believe that apple cider vinegar is also effective.
A UK company claims to have the answer, Called Dog Rocks it claims by placing this mined Australian mineral rock in your dogs water bowl it will eliminate the burnt patches. However, it is expensive and people I have spoken to about its use say it is no better, if any better, than ketchup or vinegar.
I would be interested to know from those who have tried them which is the better and cheaper solution, ketchup, vinegar or Dog Rocks?
At the end of the season, aerate the patches with a fork to a minimum of 100mm and reseed.
TIP: Did you also know that if you poured urine over your compost heap it will help break down the fibre? Ammonia in urine turns to Nitrogen which in turn feeds the bacteria which need Nitrogen, breaking down the organic matter.
